Consumption effects on society

Latin-American summary -
A civilization, which confuses the quantity with the quality, confuses the corpulence with the good feeding.

The explosion of the consumption in the current world puts more noise that all the wars and weapon more disturbing that all the carnivals.
As an old Turkish proverb says, who drinks on account, the double gets drunk.

The binge stuns and clouds the look; this big universal drunkenness seems do not have limits either in the time or in the space. But the culture of consumption sounds very much, like the drum, because it's empty; and at the time of the truth, when the tumult stops and the holiday is finished, the drunkard wakes up, only, accompanied by his shade and for the broken plates that he must pay.

The expansion of the demand collides with the borders that imposes on the same system that generates it. The system needs more and more open and wider markets, since the lungs need the air, and simultaneously he needs that they walk on the soils, since they walk, the prices of the prime matters and of the force I work. The system speaks on behalf of all, to all it directs his imperious orders of consumption, between all it spreads the buying fever; but not way: For almost all this adventure begins and ends on the screen of the TV set. The majority, which gets into debt to have things, ends up by having nothing more than debts to pay debts that generate new debts, and ends up by consuming fantasies that sometimes it materializes committing an offense.

The right to the waste, privilege of few ones, says to be the freedom of all. Say to me how much you consume and I will say to you how much you cost. According to the scientific magazine The Lancet, in the last decade the « severe obsessiveness » has grown almost 30 % between the young population of the most developed countries. Between the North American children, the obsessiveness increased in 40 % in the last sixteen years, according to the recent investigation of the Center of Sciences of the Health of the University of Colorado. The country that invented the meals and light drinks, the diet food and the fat free food, has the biggest quantity of fat persons of the world. The model consumer only bends the automobile to work and to look at television. Sat before the screen girl, spends four daily hours devouring meal made of plastic.
The garbage disguised as meal triumphs: This industry is conquering the palates of the world and is doing bits the traditions of the local kitchen. The customs of the good one to eat, that come of far, they have, in some countries, thousands of years of refinement and diversity, and are a collective patrimony that somehow is in the stoves of all and not only in the table of the rich ones. These traditions, these signs of cultural identity, these holidays of the life, are being crushed, in a fulminating way, by the imposition of knowing chemically and the only: the globalization of the hamburger, the dictatorship of the fast food. The lamination of the meal in world scale, work of McDonald's, Burger King and other factories, violates successfully the right to the self-determination of the kitchen: sacred right, because in the mouth one of his doors has the soul.

The tails before the McDonald's of Moscow, inaugurated in 1990 with big drums and saucers, symbolized the victory of Occident with so many oratory as the collapse of the Wall of Berlin.

A sign of the times: This company, which personifies the virtues of the free world, denies to his employees the freedom of affiliating to any syndicate. McDonald's violates, this way, a right legally dedicated in many countries where it operates. Meanwhile the XIVth century was born, brother Giordano da Rivalto pronounced in Florence a praise of the cities. He said that the cities were growing « because the people are glad of joining ». To join, to be. Now: who meets whom?: one finds the hope with the reality? The desire: does he meet the world? And the people: does he meet the people? If the human relations have been limited to relations between things: how many people meet the things?.

The entire world tends to turn on a big screen of television, where the things look but do not touch. The goods in offer invade and privatize the public spaces. The stations of buses and of trains, which till not long ago were spaces of meeting between persons, are turning now into spaces of commercial exhibition.

The shopping center, or shopping mall, shop window of all the shop windows, it imposes his presence that subjugates. The multitudes come, in peregrination, to this major temple of the masses of the consumption. The majority of the devout ones contemplates, in delight, the things that his pockets cannot pay, while the buying minority surrenders to the bombing of the incessant offer and extenuate. The crowd, which rises and goes down for the escalators, travels round the world: the manikins dress like in Milan or Paris and the machines sound like in Chicago, and to see and to hear it is not necessary to pay passage. The tourists come from the peoples of the interior, or of the cities that there still have not deserved these blessings of the modern happiness, pose for the photo, on the foot of the most famous international marks, since earlier they were posing on the foot of the statue of the worthy in the square. Beatriz Solano has observed that the inhabitants of the suburban quarters come to the center, to the shopping center, since earlier they were coming to the center. The traditional walk of the weekend to the center of the city, tends to be replaced with the jaunt these urban centers. Washes and ironing and hairstyles dressed in his best finery, the visitors come to a holiday where they are not invited, but they can be onlookers. Entire families tackle the trip in the spatial capsule that covers the universe of the consumption, where the aesthetics of the market have designed an amazing scenery of models, marks and labels.

The culture of the consumption, culture of the ephemeral thing, condemns everything to the desuetude mediation. Everything changes to the vertiginous rhythm of the fashion, put to the service of the need to sell. The things age in a blinking, to be replaced by other things of fleeting life. Today that the only thing that remains there is the insecurity, the goods, made not to last, they turn out so volatile as the capital that finances them and the work that generates them. The money flies at the speed of the light: yesterday it was there, today it is here, tomorrow the one who knows, and everything worker is the unemployed one in potency. Paradoxically, the shopping centers, kingdoms of the fleetingness, offer the most successful illusion of safety. They resist out of the time, without age and without root, without night and without day and without memory, and exist out of the space, beyond the turbulence of the dangerous reality of the world.

The proprietors of the world use to the world as if it was disposable: a goods of ephemeral life, which becomes exhausted as there become exhausted, to little of being born, the images that there shoots the machine gun of the television and the fashions and the idols that the publicity throws, without truce, to the market. But: to what another world are we going to change? Are we all forced to believe the story of which God has sold the planet to a few companies, because being in a bad mood it decided to privatize the universe? The society of consumption is a pitfall haunting fools. Those who have the handle simulate to ignore it, but anyone that has eyes in the face can see that the big majority of the people consumes little, small and not necessarily at all, to guarantee the existence of few nature that we have left. The social injustice is neither an error to correct, nor a shortcoming to overcome: It is an essential need. There is no nature capable of feeding a shopping center of the size of the planet.
